Workshops for children:
We have organized a series of workshop for children at the Margao centre in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Margao and Calazancio Hall, Margao during summer and Diwali holidays. The workshops focused largely on enhancing creativity, self esteem and language skills in young children. Besides the children themselves the workshops elicited a very good response from the parents.
Workshops for professionals working with children:
Sangath organised an Art Therapy Workshop on 31st January 2006 at Fundacao Oriente which was conducted by Professor Jawant Guzder, a Child Psychiatrist and Art Therapist from McGill University Canada. The workshop dealt with the difference between Art and Art Therapy and how the latter can be used to effectively help children and families with special needs. Art Therapy itself is a complex and intensive therapy which requires a lot of supervision and skills. Dr Guzder has great experience in this field having worked with children from backgrounds of migration, violence, mental ill-health and behaviour problems. In the workshop she initially shared her experiences of difficult cases and there was also a practical session with a group of children. Sangath plans to commence art therapy as one of its services. The workshop was enthusiastically attended by a mixed group of participants like artists, paediatricians, special educators, remedial teachers, psychologists, speech therapist, teachers from mainstream schools and teachers from special schools.
Workshops for youth:
We organised a three day summer camp for adolescents on various life-skills. The camp held in May 2005 covered a range of issues such as self esteem, making career decisions, critically appraising media, conflicts, friendships and relationships, reproductive and sexual health. Ten adolescents attended this camp.
Workshops in the community:
As part of the Stree Arogya Shodh research study, we conducted 15 community meetings in the research study area. Approximately 1500 women attended these meetings in which we presented the study findings and a skit was enacted in the local language to reinforce the findings and discuss their health implications. Our main message was that the common complaint of vaginal discharge was strongly associated with psychosocial factors like financial difficulties, family violence and depression, and that women need to seek appropriate help for these problems.
Workshops for teachers:
We conducted the workshop ’Helping the child with learning difficulties’, an 11 day workshop held on the 27th April to 8th May 2004 at Caritas Goa. A total of 25 participants including 4 doctors from Kerala, 19 teachers, a remedial lecturer at the Panjim B.Ed college and one parent attended the workshop. The basic objectives were capacity building through creating awareness about learning disabilities, slow learners; ADHD, children suffering due to second language acquisition problems and autism. We trained the participants on how these children can be identified and helped through Individual Education Programs, phonics and Remedial techniques in inclusive education.
In May and June 2005 we conducted two separate 12 day workshops for teachers from different schools in Goa, organised by Department of Education, Goa at the District Institute for Education and Training. (D.I.E.T). Schools such as Government School, Dona Paula; Almeida’s High School, Ponda, St Mary’s, Mapusa, Vivekananda High School, Borim were represented. Our aim was to train teachers to provide remedial help/initiate resource rooms in these schools. 6 of these schools have initiated resource rooms so far.
